Stuttgart 21, a contoversial project

The project :

Stuttgart is a rail and urbain project which has the objective to chage and modernize the Stutgart's train station.
The heart of the project is the transformation of this central train station, which is actually a terminus station, to an underground way station.
Building work began in 2010 and should be finish in 2021.

It is an European project because it will connect big European stations to facilitate transport and communication. Stuttgart 21 is a project of big one scale, upgrade Germany's and especially land of Baden-Wurtemberg's railway level. This project is part of The “Main line for Europe” which is a project for the creation of a high-speed railway line between Paris and Bratislava , it is a real TransEuropean Transport Networks.

The interest of the project :

The arguments in favour of Stuttgart 21 are essentially economic : the city will be all the more attractive as it will be better connected with the national and European network and the traveling time between cities will be reduced. Spaces gained on surface (around 100 ha) will allow the creation of numerous offices and housing. Besides, the realization of the works will stimulate the employment in all the region.
Stuttgart 21 is the symbol of the technological progress” declares Thomas, an inhabitant of the city. In fact, the project plans to build a "futuristic" station, using the most recent technologies, we can quote in particular the solar panel use, So making of this project an ecological project.
This project allows to strengthen the prestige of the city” says Franziska an inhabitant who juste return form foreign.

Criticism :

The project is the object of a controversy. A lot of demonstrations took place, the biggest having gathered more than 150 000 people. The reason of all its demonstrations is the large number of inconveniences :
the billion euro cost which would have normally of the being invested in school construction : “this project is to expensive.” declares Maria who is against this project. The duration of the works (more than 10 years) which engenders a noise, visual and environmental pollution with the dust, The disturbance of the traffic because of road work, “because of this project roads are blocked.” says Gabriele an inhabitant of the city.

Moreover, the construction of the residential area returns the much more expensive rents. The people living in the area and not having the means to pay the new rent will be excluded. This exclusion moreover already began, some citizens are without house overnight.

So, Stuttgart 21 is certainly a large-scale project, bringing with him of numerous advantages, but to also its prize of inconveniences. We attend then a conflict between the citizens and the politics. Although the project is not cancelled, the opinion of the citizens was not taken into account however.

Mercedes or Porsche

During the trip in Germany, we had to interview some people about what they think about Mercedes or Porsche cars. First, we asked if they have a car and what sort of cars they have and we were aware that althrough Stuttgart is known for Mercedes and Porsche cars, most of people have others cars like Renault, Opel or VolsWagen. Afterward, we ask what marque of cars they prefere between Mercedes and Porsche, or if they prefere others cars: the choice was difficult for some persons but the most of them prefere Porsche cars. We had deal with one exception in a group of young people: everyone were discussing about what they prefere and suddenly, we heard a small voice who said “I prefere VolsWagen”.

We ask if they visits Mercedes or Porsche Museum like us and nearly everyone had already visit both of them but they prefere Mercedes Museum for the architecture and the originality of the presentation (chronology). We realize that in Germany, we were indoctrined by the presence of Mercedes or Porsche cars since the childhood. Maybe it's why most of Germans thinks that German cars are better than others cars but also because of the design, the power etc...

Finally, we ask about crtieria that people looks when they choose their future car. Before buy this, they look the design, the color, the power but first of all, they check the price. We conclude that lot of Germain find that Porsche car are the best of all others but unfortunately, just a few people can get at have Porsche cars.

Report Stuttgart 21:

Stuttgart 21 is a German railway and urban project to completely rearrange and modernize the Stuttgart rail system, the sixth largest city in Germany. The heart of the project is the transformation of central Stuttgart now « type cul-de-sac » in an underground passage station. Moreover, railways on both sides will be adapted and connected to tunnels. On the surface, the ground for now occupied by the channels can thus be recovered (approx 100ha), it will be cleaned and converted for the development of the city.

The cost for the Stuttgart rail node was estimated at about 4,526 billion€ which will have to be paid mainly by the Stuttgart region and city, the DeutscheBahn (the German SNCF) and of course the Federal Republic of Germany.
The Construction work began in 2010 and should be completed in 2020. The project is the subject of controversy. Indeed for some of the population, the high cost of the project, the felling of trees, the duration of the works and the demolition of part of the present station classified "historical monument" are reasons that this project does not take place.

However the views of residents of the town are rather ecliptic, so we'll immediately see what they think about this project.
Now we know what is Stuttgart 21 so you can more understand the opinion of the people we asked because during the four days past in Stuttgart we asked some people about this topic what they think about Stuttgart 21 and we will We are going to put in parallel the opinion of the people to question and that show us the exhibition about Stuttgart which (who were situated in the tower Mercedes in the station of Stuttgart).
We asked nine peoples who answer to us questions and we discover that: two peoples like mister Thomas were not for the project, two other are for and the other people have no opinion of the question because they have good and bad point of view(we will see that later ) and they cannot decide in which part they are.
So we will know see the good part of the project:
During the exhibition we saw that the project of the new station is more ecologic: during the summer the sun will not warm the station because the roof of the station have a special angle Which allows not to warm the station in summer and to warm her with sun rays in winter and speed of the train is going to allow to cool quays of the station , it’s not all because one of the person we asked said that the project is going to allow to renovate the station and is going to free a little bit the landscape but that not all because in exhibition we saw they will create new neighbourhoods in Stuttgart.
But the project have not only good point, we will now see what the negative side of the project are
The peoples we asked all told us that: the project was too dear. It cost five billion Euros so it’s too expensive, to have the money they need the government reduced the money that it gave for others investment which is to quote an example the money to give to schools. One of the people we asked is a mother and she is for the project because he is good for the city but the works which are in progress cause a lot of pollution and blocks numerous roads (we saw they must to bring oxygen), the mother said that “it’s a good project for the city but not for the resident”.

So we will conclude with our group opinion about this project.
For us Stuttgart21 is not good because it is too expensive and they disadvantaged the generation of the children who live with the works because the government give to the school less money because they must use it in the project and we don’t know the project will become at the end of the project and if it will be a revolution or (sorry for the expression ) a big fail who cost more the initial price and if it will not impact the life of the resident of Stuttgart cause of the pollution.

The automobile in Stuttgart

During the journey we have work in group of three ,we work on different theme our group had the theme of the automobile in Stuttgart. We then ask people downtown related to the automobile. Our question are " What is the brands of your car?" , "Why this car?" ,"The german car are the best?", " have you been to the museum Porsche and Mercedes-Benz?"
Afficher l'image d'origineThe german like their brand of cars , the majority of us had a german car  is their safest car, they especially love the power and design , yet few people there anyway of the other car brand like Volvo or Renault.
We wonder why these cars there and no other , the answers were different, however , the choice was made on the number of space , power, color and brand image .
the last question was if they visit the Porsche Museum and Mercedes and why some people we visit both museums and other no , most preferred is the mercedes museum for its spiral architecture and size.

Report of interviews
20160510_153727_resized.jpg

Through school trip in Stuttgart in Germany, we saw automobile field. We became interested about Germans interest for automobile. We went in the Königstraße street, the main avenue of Stuttgart asked  Germans about their favorite car.

Most of them have a car or two. Gemans are unanimous in thinking that German’s cars are the best. Most part of them have mercedes but some had Opel, Volkswagen or Renault.
Some of them already go to the Porsche and Mercedes Museum and Germans prefer the Mercedes Museum because there is an chronological order and “catalogue” effect with the brand’s technological innovations than Porsche and we can learn more things in it wheareas in the other museum it’s like you go in a car dealer if you don’t take a guide. But when we ask them if they have the choice amoung a free Mercedes or a free Porsche their take the Porsche.

613.jpg

So “Why ?” well because they are pretty, fast, powerful, cozy, and everybody love it ! A young man told us that it’s “cool for show off in the city”. But back to reality, they prefer Mercedes because it’s more affordable and less expensive. After that, back to reality, we were curious to know what are their selection criteria before buy an automobile. Germans over 30 years choise usually a family car and under 30 years they save until have money for that or they research a simple car for go work, getting around town. Most of them choose the powerful (at affordable price) and the design. To conclude, Germans are different, some speak normally with us and other refuses to do. It’s a good and funny experience.

The automobile in Stuttgart

During our trip in Stuttgart we had visited the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz museum but also the Mercedes-Benz factory. Throught this few visits we discovered a lot about the importance of Mercedes-Benz in the life of the people who live there. We have seen, since our first hour in the city the importance and the monolopy of the brand Mercedes-Benz. Because we have seen right on the top of the train station the logo of Mercedes-Benz and also the street where full of Mercedes old and new.

So we decided to ask to the most people that we could find in the street some questions about their relation with the automobile.
First in a mall, we found three men who appears to be fortuned, because they were wearing suits, so we ask them a few questions to have the point of view of fortuned people. We were right about their fortune, because one of the man own at himself three cars. The others one own two cars. But not like we think before asking them, they don’t possess Mercedes but only BMW cars. We ask them about their choices and they answer us that they prefer drive in BMW to not look like everyone in Stuttgart who drive a Mercedes or Porsche, to be different. So we ask them about the different characteristics that make them choose a new car. They have said that they choose a car by the sound of the motor, because they love show the power of their cars in front of their friends and family.
After we ask a young man who appears to belong to the middle class, but unfortunately he don’t possess a car. We ask him why, and he said that here in Stuttgart a car is no necessary because there is a lot of public transport. But we try to know something about his point of view of the car, so we ask him if he had visited one of the two museum of Stuttgart and he said yes that he visited the two, with the school when he was a kid. So we ask him which he prefer, and he said the Mercedes-Benz museum because there is so much much old car who retraces the history of the brand.
In the street we found a young couple with a baby in a pushchair, so we ask them the sames questions that before. We learn that they possess a Lancia. So we ask them why they have choose this car, they answered that the price was comfortable for them, because they haved left the school only a few years ago. We ask them if they were interested by a german car, and they said that if in the future they would like an Mercedes electric car. We ask them the characteristics that they used to seen first in a new car, and they said that the design own a big part on the choice but also the technology like the back-up camera.
After that we found an old couple, they possess a brand new Porsche, they said that they have saved for a long time before to be able to afford this car. So we ask them about their relation with the german cars, and they said that they only have possess german car during their life, because they think that they offer much more fiability. Before they have own Volkswagen cars. But now that their kids are grown up, they can afford a Porsche, their dream car. We ask them if in the futur they will think to buy a french car, they said : “ Ohhh no ! “. We ask them which model is their Porsche, and they said that is a Cayman, and they have chosen this car because she is very sportive.

So we can say, that the people of Stuttgart is very influenced by Mercedes-Benz and the monopoly of the german brands. They choose their car because of the price, but if they have the money, they will prefer buy a german car. They live in Mercedes, the train station is mark with the logo of Mercedes-Benz and also the stadium of the soccer team. Mercedes-Benz is also the first employer of the city with is big factory in Sindelfingen. But with all this, not everyone is able to own a Mercedes.

The Stuttgart 21 project

Stuttgart 21 is a big rail project aimed at make a new station modernest instead of the old station and create or connect railways. This station would be underground in order to get back an big area.

The aim of this project is to facilitate the trains moving and to get back a big area for the news structures.

The benefits of the project are a faster and more effective train trafic, the connection with the line Paris-Budapest, installations more ecological and modern and a recovery of a big area.
The disadvantages are, in first, the big cost of producing of the project amounting to EUR 7 billions.
The circulation is disrupt and the public works will degrade the city.

We asked to the population what they think about Stuttgart 21. The partisans think it will be more convenient for traveling, others think the station need be renovated and it will be a steps towards the future. The opposants say the cost is huge and they considere the station like a monument. Others opposants do not believe in the project success

Typical food in Germany:

The bretzel

During our school trip in Stuttgart, we were confronted to local specialities. We searched something simple and easy to eat. So we found the bretzel.

Little bretzel bakery
The bretzel 1,40€
The bretzel is a salted bread, which has the size of a hand. One of us does not really like it because it was very salted, more we chew, more the taste of salt was pronounced. But it was not very disgusting.

We questionned few persons about it. One of them was Christian. He said that most of German people like it. He also said that he eat it four times a week, especially at the breakfast time. Then there was a couple. They added that they love eat bretzel with butter like a toast (We saw it in some bakeries).
Another bakery

Finally the bretzel is something apreciate by Germans, every bakery sell it and many of them try different recipes with cereals

The Culinary speciality in Germany

We went to Stuttgart during 3 days. During the trip, We have seen the lifestyle of Germans. In Our group, we talk about more precisely the culinary specialty of Germans. We ate curry wurst.

The curry wurst it's a German dish which is consisting sausages which is soaked in Curry sauce with bread. We have eaten this dish in a chain of fast food in a station of subway. Our opinion was the curry sauce was salted but with the sausages and bread was good.

The curry wurst in this restaurant cost 2,30€,it's a good price if we compare to other chain of fast food. They sell between 200 to 300 curry wurst per day.

We have asked at 7 peoples in the street to know their opinion.5 peoples told that they like this dish and 2 peoples didn't like. In the other hand, the majority of this people have said their favourite dish in Germany it's the schnitzel. To finish, in the specialty french, They said cheese and “gratin dauphinois”.
